Short Center South
Short Center South (SCS) was established in 1993 when the fast-growing Short Center Sacramento was divided into two separate programs in order to provide more individualized services to more clients. A year later, SCS moved into a facility in the southern part of Sacramento making access easier for participants living in outlying areas. In this program students are able to choose from several avenues of artistic expression in the visual and performing arts as well as community and lifestyle classes.
SCS is firmly based in the arts, but offers options in education and recreation that promote personal growth and daily life skills. Studio art students participate in gallery shows and utilize varied mediums and techniques including watercolor painting, tile and mosaic murals, sculpture, traditional ceramics, collage, woodwork and textiles. Additionally, the program offers photography, videography, film editing and animation. Academic classes include reading, computer science, and online training.
Life skill classes include physical education, sign language and relationship building skills. Mobility and physical therapy activities include fitness at the YMCA/YWCA, participation in the Special Olympics, and dance classes. Clients also have vocational opportunities to learn janitorial job skills, and an on-site work program packaging parts for model airplanes which ship all over the world.
